assy flight safety videos aren’t a new idea — Air New Zealand and Delta have been doing them for years — but Virgin America’s new combination safety video/dance party is a nuclear weapon in the entertaining-flight-safety-video arms race. The music and lyrics are top-notch, the dancing is invigorating, and the young girl rapping manages to steal the show. Sure, there’s a part of me that misses Virgin America’s more subtle, animated 2007 video (which practically invented the genre), but when flight attendants voluntarily dance in the aisles and passengers spontaneously cheer after hearing a list of FAA rules, the airline must be doing something right. After all, 8.5 million people have watched the video on YouTube just for its entertainment value. Featuring performers from So You Think You Can Dance — TV’s most inspiring talent show — doesn’t hurt either. It’s embarrassing, but even I’ve caught myself singing “Tonight get ready to fly, because we’re gonna live it on up on the sky…” to myself in the airport concourse on the way to the baggage claim. WB
