pened in 1899, the Mount Nelson may be the world’s most well-respected colonial hotel. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why my family still talks about the time that we had lunch and high tea on the hotel’s back lawn. My club sandwich was excellent, as was the service, but I think it was the tranquilizing effect of the hotel’s extravagant gardens and its striking, pink exterior that caught our imagination. With Cape Town’s Table Mountain filling the background, this place is pure elegance. WB
