aybe it has something to do with spending two weeks in hostels in India before my arrival at this hotel in Vietnam, but my stay at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi was one of my favorite hotel experiences ever. The fantastic property was featured in Graham Greene’s The Quiet American, a classic novel about a journalist living in Vietnam during the French Indochina War. While I was there, I spent nights by the pool, listening to a talented French-Vietnamese singer with a silky voice entertain the bar with standards from the 1950s. The hotel’s interior design is perfectly elegant and understated, and the laundry service made all of the clothes I wore during my previous trip to India look brand new again. WB
