first fell in love with long-form improv comedy after seeing The Crazy Uncle Joe Show at the famous Groundlings, which gives audience members a dense weave of improvised stories over the course of 80 minutes. It’s an excellent show playing every Wednesday night at The Groundlings. But, it was Upright Citizens Brigade’s long-form improv comedy that eventually won my heart, when I saw the theater’s mind-blowingly funny Three on Three Improv Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend in New York. I’ve never laughed so hard at a comedy show in my life as I did when I saw team Sabonis’s dock-fishing-kidnapping scene, team According to Jim, Rory, and Craig’s dirigible-piloting scene, and team Girlfriends Best Friends’s roller-coaster-with-Woodrow-Wilson scene. Since then, I’ve seen tens of UCB shows in Los Angeles and dragged many friends along. The rich Los Angeles comedy scene is jam-packed with talented comedic actors, and many of them can be seen at any of the (usually) four shows per night on the UCB stage ($5 to $10). Soon enough, you’ll get jealous enough of UCB performers’ ability to generate nonstop laughter that you’ll end up in one of the theater’s excellent and well-respected improv comedy classes.
