veryone thinks that the best place to see Vincent Van Gogh’s art is in Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, but everyone is wrong. It’s true that the Van Gogh Museum is an excellent museum, but it sits in the middle of Museum Square, making it the most popular — and most crowded — museum in the Netherlands. On the other hand, the Kröller-Müller Museum, which holds the largest private collection of Van Gogh art in the world, sits hidden in the middle of Hoge Veluwe National Park, about 20 kilometers outside the rarely visited Dutch city of Apeldoorn. Yes, the museum is harder to get to, but that’s what makes it great. During a trip to the Netherlands in 2005, I took a train from Amsterdam to Apeldoorn, took a public bus to Hoge Veluwe National Park, and then rented one of the park’s 1,700 bicycles to cycle through the forest to the museum. When I arrived, I was treated to over 100 Van Gogh pieces and a huge amount of paintings from a variety of other artists — and I was the only museum guest. Enjoying Van Gogh in near silence, enveloped by the soothing sounds of the surrounding forest, was worth every kilometer of the journey. WB
